Cost-cutting measures might not mean lost jobs for experience workers.

The plunging price of oil has created a dilemma for major energy companies as they cut costs and prepare for what experts say will be inevitable job reductions, with mid-level administrators considered far more vulnerable than engineers and other highly skilled workers.

When oil prices are volatile, companies may rely more on contract workers rather than permanent hires, says Keith Wolf, managing director of Murray Resources, a Houston-based recruiting and staffing firm.
