Is a Seasonal Job Your Path to Full-Time Employment?

During the holiday season, employers are hiring at an unprecedented pace. You truly want a full-time job, but is taking a seasonal one your ticket to a permanent position? Murray Resources has the answers you’re looking for.

In fact, as one of Houston’s top temp staffing agencies, we know that many workers have transitioned into more permanent jobs from seasonal ones. And it’s something that also happens nationwide.

For instance, in 2018, 40% of seasonal workers hired by Target remained on into the New Year. At Macy’s, 10% of their 80,000 temporary workers also became full-time employees. That’s 8,000 people.

So if you’re looking for a full-time role, but can only find seasonal employment opportunities, don’t get discouraged. Instead, look at the situation as a month-long interview that can get your foot in the door at a top employer in a permanent way in the New Year. To give yourself the best chance of doing so, make sure you:

Approach it like a full-time job.

That means showing up on time, being prepared, dressing appropriately and always acting professionally. Just because it’s not a full-time job yet doesn’t mean you can deliver anything but your A-game.

Learn all you can.

While on the temp job, bring a notebook and pen with you wherever you go. Jot down the names of new people you meet as well as the different information you learn. Make it your goal to find out as much about the company as you can so that if you are given the opportunity to interview for a permanent position, you can answer questions intelligently and better explain why you’re a great fit.

Get to know your co-workers.

Temporary workers can often feel isolated from full-time staff. But make an effort to be friendly and get to know them. If the time comes and you’re interviewing for a full-time job, they’ll be able to serve as a referral source for you.

Make your goals known to your boss.

Tell your manager or boss that you’re interested in a full-time job with the company. That way, if something opens up, they’ll be able to keep you in mind. Even if a position isn’t available immediately in the New Year, in the months ahead as opportunities arise, you can be the first call they make.
