At larger companies, flexible arrangements trend toward highly tenured employees. Small businesses, meanwhile, “recognize telecommuting flexibility as an area where they can effectively compete with larger competitors for talent.”

While technology provides the tools that enable remote work, employees must build trust and goodwill with co-workers and managers so they respect and support the arrangement, Wolf said.

“That takes time, and it’s particularly difficult to build with limited face time.”
