Why 2022 Is the Perfect Time to Look for a Job in Oil & Gas in Texas
June 15, 2022
In the coming years, Texas will be ramping up production of gas. This means more jobs in the sector, not only in the future, but right now, in 2022.
In fact, in just March alone, there was an increase of 4,300 jobs from the previous month’s employment numbers. Since March 2021, there’s been a jump of 21,700 new upstream jobs created in the Texas oil and gas industry. This includes 3,600 in oil and gas extraction and 18,100 jobs in other services related to the industry. The Houston metro area saw the largest increase in employment in the oil and gas industry.
According to Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil & Gas Association:
“Despite continued policy setbacks and supply bottleneck challenges, oil and natural gas companies are moving forward to meet demand here at home and abroad. These historic job numbers are a sign of strength and, when coupled with the rig count increase of about 58% from last year, are clear indicators of the commitment of the oil and natural gas industry to continue to deliver Texas and American energy security.”
All these numbers add up to one simple fact: Now’s an ideal time to look for a job in the oil and gas sector in Texas, whether you’re a veteran candidate with years of experience in the sector or looking to break into it.
To help you find your next job in the Texas oil and gas industry, here are some tips to keep in mind:
Tap your network.
While there are many openings in the oil and gas industry, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy to find a job. It’s why leveraging your network is one of the best steps you can take.
The industry is a tight-knit one, so if you know someone who works in an oil and gas job or for a company you’re interested in, reach out and ask for a recommendation. Consider family, friends, former co-workers, former classmates, and anyone else in your network. A recommendation is a far more effective way to get your foot in the door than a resume on its own.
Use social media.
Social media offers a range of platforms you can use to find your next job in the oil and gas sector. You can use sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to expand your network and get in touch with those in positions you’re interested in. You can also research companies, and find out more about what’s it like to work for them and the kinds of skills that are most important for success on the job. Finally, you can join groups and forums that will assist you in your job search.
Consider an apprentice program.
If you’re just starting out in your career and want to gain some experience or aren’t sure which area in oil and gas you want to specialize in, an apprenticeship is an ideal avenue for you. Many large corporations in the industry have apprentice programs. When you participate in one, you can get a sense of what it’s like to work in the field and what you’ll need to get ahead in the sector. You can also jumpstart your career in an opportunity where you’re earning while you’re learning.
Offer flexibility to companies.
Jobs in oil and gas are not always nine to five. If you’re open to a shift at a different time, you’ll be more likely to find a job, faster. There are also jobs with long hours, fluctuating shifts, periods of constant work and even times when you’re away from home, depending on your position. This means if you’re able to handle the changes and roll with them, you’ll be a far more appealing candidate to top employers.
When you’re interviewing for jobs, let the hiring manager know that you’re flexible in terms of scheduling and also even willing to travel. This will make you more marketable, so you land the job you want.
Get help from a professional recruiter.
When you turn to a recruiter in the oil and gas industry, they’ll be able to offer you access to a variety of possibilities, depending on your experience and preferences. They can also connect you to the hidden job market, which are positions that are open but not always advertised publicly. This increases will boost your chance of not only finding a new job faster, but the right-fit position for you.
