Get Started With Your Pre-Job Search Checklist
October 21, 2019
Job searches are complicated with so many steps involved. If you’re currently still employed, it can feel overwhelming, as a result. That’s why it’s helpful to break it all down so that you have a game plan in place. To help you do that, here are a few tips to follow:
Get your resume ready.
Make sure that you have a solid and updated resume in place before you hit the “go” button on your job search. When that perfect opportunity shows up, you’ll have all you need to apply and won’t have to stress by pulling an all-nighter to get your resume together.
Polish your LinkedIn profile.
In addition to your resume, you’re going to want to ensure your LinkedIn profile is current and in alignment with your resume. While they don’t have to provide the exact same information, there shouldn’t be any discrepancies between the two. Otherwise, the hiring manager will get confused.
Clean up social media.
In today’s world, one of the first things a hiring manager is going to do is Google you. So if something comes up on Facebook or Instagram that’s less than flattering, it’s going to impact their impression of you and might even sabotage your entire job search. Therefore, before you make a move and start applying to jobs, Google yourself to find out what hiring managers will see.
Reach out to your network.
One of the most effective ways to find a new job is through your network. Not only can the people in it keep you updated about opportunities, but you can also hand deliver your resume to a hiring manager and put in a good word for you. These favors are priceless and will go a long way in getting you an interview.
Take it slow when submitting.
When you see that ideal job advertised, you want to be the first to apply. However, before you do:
- Read through the posting a few times to make sure you fully understand the directions and what they’re asking you to submit.
- Tweak your resume and cover letter so it’s customized to the position.
- Proofread it several times to ensure it’s error-free.
It’s better to take your time to send in a quality application than submitting something that’s rushed and sloppy.
