Looking for a new job in the year ahead? The thought of reaching out to an old boss might cross your mind. But is it a good idea? And what are the chances you’d get hired back?
When it comes to this type of situation, it depends on how you left your job at the company. If it was on good terms and you gained new skills that they’re on the hunt for, then it makes sense to reach out. But before you do, make sure it’s truly the kind of work environment you’re after, not just a way to get out of a current job you don’t love.
If the hiring manager is an old boss at a different company, then the same applies. If you left on good terms and enjoyed working for that person, then it’s a good idea to reconnect with an old boss. Even if you don’t get the job, it’s an excellent way to network and let that individual know that you’re searching for a new opportunity, so they can keep you informed about any other positions that arise at your company.
If you do decide to reach out to an old boss, just make sure you remind them of your work relationship and your job history together. For instance, you can say something in your cover letter, such as:
“Dear Mike, It’s been a long time! I hope you’re doing well. I’m currently searching for a new job and came across your company’s listing for a sales assistant. Is there any way we can touch base about the opportunity? Since we worked together at ABC company, I’ve been working for XYZ firm and have been a top sales associate there for two years. I’ve attached my resume for further review. Please let me know when you have a moment and we can connect!”
All that said, if there was any bad blood between you and your old boss, then applying is a real risk. Even if the opportunity sounds ideal, do you really want to work for someone you didn’t get along with in the past? Plus, even if you’re open to the idea, your old manager might not be and could filter you out of the running as soon as they come across your resume, so it’s best to apply for a new job with a new boss.
