If you’re in the unfortunate situation of having to lay off an employee due to economic constraints or other unforeseen circumstances, you may be asked to write a letter of recommendation for the departing employee(s).

Typically, when an employee is laid off, it’s for reasons outside of their control. A strong letter of recommendation can communicate to future employers that the employee should receive strong consideration for employment.

An effective reference letter should include the following points, written on company letterhead:

• Dates of employment
• Reference to a layoff that was outside the employee’s control
• An outline of their duties or some of the key projects on which they worked
• The employee’s strengths
• A stated recommendation for the employee

John Smith was employed by ACME Corporation from Start Date to End Date.

Unfortunately, John’s tenure was prematurely cut short due to the economic constraints the company faced as a result of [insert cause here]. John was one of several excellent employees that the company was not able to retain.

Whether it was writing highly-researched white papers, editing copy, communicating with reporters and brand influencers, or sourcing and closing brand partnerships, John always delivered excellent results.
